230912 – Power in the Spoken Word

Mark 11:21-23 (NKJV)And Peter, remembering, said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.”So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God”. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.

This passage recounts how Jesus cursed the fig tree, and it withered away at His command, showing us that there is power in the spoken word. The seen world is shaped by the unseen Words of God. God spoke creation into existence and His Word continues to uphold the universe. Scripture also tells us that God’s Word will not return void but will accomplish His purposes and prosper in all that it is sent to do.

God holds the highest position and there is no being that is above Him. Through the power of His spoken Word, He created the heavens, the earth, and the universe, bringing forth visible things from the invisible, and creating something out of nothing. As human beings, we are made in the image of God, and we are endowed with the capacity to speak like He does. Of all of God’s creations, only mankind has the ability of speech.

Hebrews 11:3 (NKJV) By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

God has given us the right to make choices in our lives as free moral agents. Therefore, nobody has authority over our lives but ourselves. Hence, what we speak, confess, or declare with our mouths carries tremendous power and releases the authority to act over our lives. Though the spoken word may be invisible, its effects are set into motion the moment it is uttered. Our words will give power or authority to either God to act or the enemy to bring forth destruction. Death and life are in the power of the tongue. The fruit we consume in our lives is determined by the words we speak, and the power to shape our circumstances lies within our tongues.

Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruits.

We need to begin to act on what Jesus asked us to do which is to speak to the mountain! We do not just pray about the problem or ask Jesus to do something about it; Jesus asked us to speak to the mountain.

Because you have been given the authority to run your own life, you must want to have the problem removed, and you must speak and release it to God to act on it. This is the reason why Jesus asked us to have faith in God after we have spoken to the mountain.
