231016 – Even When Things Are Bad, God Is Good

The story of Exodus begins when Pharaoh comes to power in Egypt. He did not believe in God and held a deep hatred for God’s chosen people, the Israelites. The Israelites were being blessed with so many children that it infuriated Pharaoh because they were overtaking his country. This ruthless ruler feared the Israelite slaves would grow enough in number to rebel, so he ordered all of their male babies murdered. I know, it’s dark.

Exodus 1:12-14

“But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread, so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites and worked them ruthlessly as slaves. They made their lives bitter with harsh labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields.”

God’s favor doesn’t always mean good fortune. The Israelites had favor with God but were brutally oppressed by an evil regime. I’m sure they were wishing day in and day out for a miracle. They undoubtedly wanted their freedom from slavery and a safe life for their children, especially their baby boys with hits out on them. God loved them, but He didn’t prevent the evil Pharaoh from hurting them in this moment.

Just because bad things are happening to you doesn’t mean good things aren’t happening through you. God was preparing the Israelites to be part of one of the most amazing comeback stories in human history. He had a plan for their deliverance. He had a plan for their freedom. It just wasn’t unfolding immediately. God has a plan for your life, too. No matter how people are treating you, God is with you, and He loves you more than you can fathom. Just like in the Israelites’ case, God is working behind the scenes. Never let people’s bad actions lead you to doubt the goodness of our God.
