27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 28 COME to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you REST. 29 Take My YOKE upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find REST for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Matthew 11:27-30 (NKJV)
Discussion Questions:
Part A Questions:
1) The word “know” (from the Greek verb ginōskō) means a deep, personal, and intimate relationship, rather than just knowing surface-level facts about someone. In what ways do you know God personally rather than just knowing facts about Him? Concurrently, in what ways does God know you more deeply than even your closest family and friends (Philippians 3:8)?
2) According to this passage, to whom does Jesus choose to reveal the Father, and who is excluded from this understanding? Reflecting on your own life, what is currently hindering you from revealing the Son to those around you (Psalm 139:1-3)?
Part B Questions
1 ) How does it make you feel to know that you can approach the King of all Kings without having to prove yourself or earn your place? How would your life be different (Hebrews 4:16, Ephesians 3:12)?
2) In what ways are you still striving for achievements or trying to prove your worth just to feel at ease when approaching God in this season of life (Galatians 3:23, Philippians 3:3)? Consider the following areas: a) The Secular Tier: Climbing toward a prestige career, chasing academic achievements, or hoarding financial stability to feel secure. b) The Social & Digital Tier: Guarding your mianzi (public face), fulfilling intense expectations of filial piety, projecting a picture-perfect family, or chasing validation through WeChat, TikTok, or Instagram likes to soothe your internal self-image. c) The Expat & Cultural Tier: Straining to master Chinese culture/language, navigating complex local business etiquette, or fighting for basic competence and autonomy in a foreign environment. d) The Spiritual Tier: Relying on your biblical knowledge, clinging to church leadership roles, or turning your prayer time, Bible reading, and church service into a performance checklist.
Part C Questions
1) Who or what in your life is making you want to quit right now? If you were to surrender your rights and approach this person or situation with Christlike humility—submitting to being yoked together with Jesus—how would that shift your perspective from serving yourself to loving your neighbor and glorifying the Lord (Philippians 2:3-5, Galatians 6:9)?
2) Matthew 11:29 is the only place in the Gospels where Jesus explicitly describes His own heart. But what does it mean for Him to be “gentle and lowly in heart”? What is the difference between being weak and being gentle? “Lowly in heart” can mean being “down-to-earth.” In what ways do you find Jesus down-to-earth, either through the stories in the Gospels or in your own personal interactions with Him (John 13:4-5)?
Sermon Summary
In today’s fast-paced society, many people struggle to find rest, left exhausted by worry and life’s uncertainties. However, true rest for the soul can be found by turning to God through Jesus Christ, as promised in Matthew 11:27-30.
While people often pursue peace through financial, emotional, or physical means, Jesus fulfills all these needs. By offloading burdens to Him and trusting in His love, believers can find genuine peace. Taking on Jesus’ “easy yoke” allows individuals to rest because He has already resolved the issue of sin and completely revealed the grace and truth of God.
