By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death. And he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken. He was commended as having pleased God’. But then he goes on to say- the writer does-‘without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him’.
Hebrews 11:5-6
Q & A:
- Who do you try to please the most in your life, be your parents, spouse, friends or enemies? Discuss the problems or struggles you have when you try to please them in meeting their expectation or standards. How is it possible to please God, seeing that the Pharisees only wanted to please people and seek approval of one another? (Heb 11:5-6; Phi 3:5-7; John 5:44)
- Explain the difference between the two kinds of faith, saving faith and persistent faith. Discuss how have the characters in the Hall of Faith (Enoch, Noah, Abraham and the rest) demonstrated in common in pleasing God with the various tasks that each was given. (2 Cor 5:21; Heb 11:6; Heb 12:1-2)
- Define faith and explain your view on “seeing is believing” versus “faith is when you don’t see and you still believe”. Do you still believe that God exists when you face a trial, test or tribulation and discuss what can help you in not giving up when the devil tries to get you to doubt and question God? (2 Cor 5:10; Heb 11:1)
