Luke 5:5-9 (NKJV) But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken.
Do you believe that the Lord is able to make a way in the wilderness and a path in the desert? Most definitely! Acting on what He has spoken to us through the prayer of consecration is the way that He has made in the wilderness and a path in the desert. It takes faith to follow the path, but the wonderful thing is we have the Holy Spirit as our guide and helper.
Simon Peter could have had two reactions when he heard the Lord’s instruction. He could have rejected the instruction, been offended by the suggestion, and stayed on shore, or followed the Lord’s instruction. Note that they have toiled all night, washed their nets, and were probably physically exhausted after fishing all night, but he would have missed the catch if he had taken time to rationalise and reacted in his flesh against the idea.
Thankfully, Simon Peter acknowledged Jesus as Master and let down the net immediately. The instruction wasn’t logical nor was it professional to launch out into the deep during the day. Regardless, he acted on what he heard and obeyed the instruction. They had such a huge catch that they had to wave to the other boat to help and the boat began to sink under the weight of the fishes! Simon Peter knew that it was supernatural and repented of his ways.
What have you heard from the Lord? Are you acting on what you have heard from Him? Are you willing to step out in faith to trust His leading? There must be a corresponding action to our faith when we perceive that we have heard from the Lord. We will not witness the work of God in our lives unless we step out in faith to believe and act on His word.
The best way of consecration is to submit your plans to the Lord. You will have a firm footing when He has spoken to you even when you are faced with a situation contrary to what you have heard from the Lord. Act on His Word, and He will make a way.
Sermon Series: A Firm Footing
