Ephesians 4:29 – 31 (NKJV) Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.
The Holy Spirit has been assigned to help every believer, but if we want to tap into His help and be led by the Holy Spirit in our daily lives, we need to get to know Him and be able to recognise His voice. Did you know that the Holy Spirit has feelings and He won’t keep quiet about them? He will speak to us clearly, at times gently but also authoritatively depending on the situation.
The Holy Spirit speaks to our “spirit man”, which is where our conscience is. He is also extremely sensitive. Therefore, we can train ourselves to listen to His voice by learning to yield to Him in daily matters. Because He is holy, He can be easily grieved if we blatantly disregard His prompting and depart from holiness. Even though our conscience has been cleansed by the blood of Jesus, if we sin repeatedly, our conscience will become seared. We grieve the Holy Spirit whenever we refuse to listen to His prompting but allow the flesh to dominate us, such as allowing anger, bitterness, evil speaking, and wrath to get the better of us.
We receive guidance and direction from the Holy Spirit through our spirit rather than our minds and bodies, and He will speak in an authoritative voice and ask us not to yield to the flesh or temptation. When we control our mouths and refrain from hurting others with our words, and when we choose to speak words of edification to others and control our anger and words, we will experience the peace of the Holy Spirit because we are yielding to the Holy Spirit. This is how we learn to tune in to His leading.
If we truly appreciate what Christ has done for us on the cross, we will want to live a consecrated and sanctified life and love our neighbour as we love ourselves. As we begin to live our lives yielded to the Holy Spirit, wisdom will enter our lives because we are open to His leading, and over time, His voice will start to get louder and clearer in our lives.
Whenever we yield to the Holy Spirit, we are training and developing our spirit to be a safe guide for God to use, and we will become more conscious of our spirit being.
Sermon Series: How to Be Led by the Holy Spirit in Your Daily Life?
