Silence
Words are powerful. When words are spoken without self-control, they have the ability to damage feelings, relationships and even people’s lives. Remember how you were told “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” as a kid?
Solomon gives us similar advice in Ecclesiastes.
Ecclesiastes 3:1,7
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens… a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak.
It’s important to learn when it’s the right time to speak and when it’s the right time to be silent. The key to knowing the difference is rooted in wisdom and self-control. The Bible teaches us to be quiet when we’re angry (James 1:19), tearing others down (Eph. 4:29), or belittling others (Proverbs 11:12). Silence is more powerful than speech when it gives you time to replace anger with love. Next time you are losing control of your temper and your words, stop and be silent. Take time to calm down and center yourself in God’s love.
Prayer Prompt: Jesus, please help me to have self-control when I get angry or upset with others. Remind me to quietly remove myself from the situation until I can approach it with words that will glorify you.
