2 Corinthians 9:6,10 (NKJV) But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.…Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness.
As Christians, when we face financial pressure or times of lack, why and how should we give? We should be humble. It may involve adjusting our lifestyle—cutting expenses, living in more affordable homes, or taking on humble jobs. Follow these biblical financial principles according to your ability and trust in the Lord’s deliverance. Although it may take time, it will strengthen our faith in God and His Word.
The biblical principle of sowing and reaping is easy to understand because we all know we will reap after we sow. The size of the harvest depends on how much we have sown. We shouldn’t expect a harvest if we haven’t sown any seed. The more we sow, the more we will reap. Once we have proven ourselves faithful with the small things, God will trust us with more so that we can grow the fruits of our righteousness through giving!
A faithful steward of God’s resources does not hoard money but remains attentive to what the Master desires him to give. Jesus’ heart is full of compassion—for the lost who need salvation, for the sick, for children, and for the poor. As individuals and as the church, we are called to participate in His compassion through giving. The gospel itself came to us freely through Jesus’ death on the cross, but the ministry of the gospel requires financial resources.
We need to remember this biblical financial principle so that we will trust in the Lord and not in the world. We are the body of Christ, and the Holy Spirit dwells in us. Therefore, He will prompt us to act on His behalf. God will only supply and multiply to us after we have faithfully sown into the areas He has instructed!
Luke 6:38 (NKJV) Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
God will multiply the seeds we have sown so that we can continue giving to various causes. It is an act of righteousness to give according to how the Lord leads us—whether for a mission, for the poor and needy, or for anything He has placed in our hearts. It is a test of obedience, stewardship, and faithfulness whenever the Lord prompts us to give. If we are not faithful with the little, why should God entrust us with more?
Reflection: When financial pressure comes, do you respond with humility and obedience, or do you pull back from giving? What does this reveal about where your trust lies?
