Luke 16:10 (NKJV) “He who is faithful in a very little thing is also faithful in much; and he who is dishonest in a very little thing is also dishonest in much.”
Junior staff are rarely promoted to the top position in the department unless they prove capable of handling the job responsibilities and the workload. If we can’t even complete a simple assignment with excellence, the likelihood of better opportunities remains low. Sometimes, we can be inflexible about what we want to do instead of focusing on what the company requires from us. Knowingly or unknowingly, we resist the job responsibilities assigned to us, or at times, we feel that we should be doing better work than our current role. If we resist accepting what is at hand, it indicates an attitude problem. A good attitude towards our work, whether the task is big or small, will bless the people with whom we work.
Matthew 25:24,28 (NKJV) “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed…So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.
In this passage, the servant had a preconception that the owner was a harsh man. This influenced his attitude towards his master. Instead of obeying the master’s instruction to be good, faithful, and to use the talent entrusted to him, he chose to bury it in the ground. He believed everything would be fine if he kept it as it was, whereas God expected him to do his best with his talent. Similarly, all employers want us to perform our best and fulfil our duties. In fact, we will only be promoted or considered for promotion if we have met or exceeded expectations.
This servant’s attitude was, “It’s best not to do anything so there won’t be accountability.” In the workplace or beyond, some people will do the bare minimum, shy away from more responsibilities, and not take initiative. God calls these people lazy and wicked servants. In contrast, those who are faithful in making good with the talents God has entrusted to them will be rewarded by Him and enter the joy of the Lord. We are stewards of the talents He gave us.
Certain personalities are outstanding at promoting themselves but poor at taking action. They are good communicators but lack follow-through and attention to detail. They do not work as if they are working for God and show little faithfulness in their day-to-day responsibilities.
Being a good and faithful servant means that we are faithful to God in utilising our talents to the fullest in small and big tasks daily, and give Him glory wherever we are.
