John 10:27-28 (NKJV) My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.
As Christians, when we make decisions about our lives, we should always ask God for a book, chapter, and verse (BCV) for confirmation, because in times of challenge, His Rhema will help us to anchor our faith. The Word gives substance to our faith, just as Peter walked on water based on the Word from Jesus, “Come” (Matthew 14:29). Without the Word from God, doing something like that would be foolish, presumptuous, and suicidal.
John 16:13 (NKJV) However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
We should also be sensitive to the leading and witness of the Holy Spirit. Having the inner witness of the Holy Spirit is a vital part of our spiritual walk, because it provides us with a firm footing as we navigate the storms of our lives. To cultivate and develop this inner witness, we should focus on the following biblical principles:
Understand your triune nature—You must recognise that you are a three-part being—spirit, soul, and body. While your soul operates on logic and your body through natural senses, your spirit is the part of you that is sensitive to God.
Prioritise praying in the Spirit (or tongues)- The most effective way to sharpen your sensitivity to the inner witness is by praying in tongues. This supernatural prayer language bypasses the natural mind—where doubt often lives—and allows your spirit to be in direct communication with God.
Recognising His voice: As you practise this daily discipline, the Holy Spirit’s voice becomes more recognisable, and His guidance becomes a natural, steady flow rather than an occasional event.
The Holy Spirit is a gentleman. Therefore, to experience His witness, you must intentionally yield your tongue, attention, and focus to Him. This requires a posture of humility, admitting that your natural mind does not know everything and surrendering control of the “conversation” to the One who knows the end from the beginning.
The inner witness often manifests in two primary ways:
- The witness of peace: A sense of perfect harmony and rest in your soul regarding a decision.
- The “check”: An inner uneasiness, heaviness, or “red light” in your spirit that warns you something is not right, even if the situation looks good logically.
In a fast-paced society, the “noise” of the world can drown out the Spirit’s whisper. By cutting off natural pleasures and distractions, we can quiet the flesh and tune our spirits to receive spiritual guidance more clearly.
Reflection: What are some practical ways that can help you to listen to the prompting of the Holy Spirit?
