Luke 4:18 (NKJV) The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.
Acts 10:38 (NKJV) how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
1 John 1:5-6 (NKJV) This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
The Bible reveals in 1 Samuel 30:1-8 that David had the right attitude and relationship with God, as shown in his response to the circumstances when his wives were taken captive. A person’s true character is always revealed in a crisis. David had to manage his emotions, especially in response to the men’s reaction and the captivity of his family members. David didn’t blame God, nor was he bitter towards God. He knew that the source of his crisis was not God—God is good. This conviction that God is not the source of our tribulations and afflictions helps us tremendously through emotional turmoil.
We need to rightly divide the Word of God. Through these three Scriptures, we can divide the work of God and the scheme of the devil. God liberates, while the devil wants to oppress and hold people in captivity. The Scriptures revealed that any form of oppression, poverty, captivity, and broken heartedness is not the work of God. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever! The anointing or the presence of God is the yoke-destroying, burden-removing power of God.
‘God is good all the time’ must not be a cliché we use only when times are good, but more importantly, when times are bad! This conviction must not be baseless, nor should it depend on the environment and the circumstances. It should be deeply grounded in the Word, because that’s where our conviction should be established. Once our foundation is built on the Word, it will not be shaken when life’s storms hit us.
Meanwhile, we also need to be mindful to walk in the truth and not in darkness. God is not mocked because a man will reap what he has sown. We will reap corruption if we sow corruption or decide to live independently of God. We will have to face the consequences of the decisions that we make (Galatians 6:7-8).
Reflection: How does knowing that God’s heart is to heal—and not to harm—change the way you go through or approach Him in your pain?
