John 10:27 (NKJV) The sheep that are My own hear My voice and listen to Me; I know them, and they follow Me.
Romans 8:14-16 (NKJV) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
God would like to speak to you, lead you, and guide you. Today, God primarily speaks to us through the Bible and the leading of the Holy Spirit.
We are three-part beings with a spirit, a soul, and a body. It is the spirit being that is sensitive to God. Scripture reveals that God leads us through the spirit man and bears witness with our spirit. He does not lead us in our soul, where our mind and intellect are located, because spiritual things—including seeking confirmation from the Holy Spirit—are discerned by the spirit. We will have an inner witness of peace to proceed if the Holy Spirit agrees. We need to train ourselves to yield to and be led by the Holy Spirit.
This is when we simply know something on the inside—an inward knowing. It doesn’t come through our physical senses but from the Holy Spirit speaking directly to our spirit. It is a quiet conviction that guides us in a situation or specific area of life. Sometimes it comes as an inner urge or prompting. At other times, it is an uncomfortable check—not in our emotions or body, but deep within—warning us not to move forward. It’s the “red light” or “yellow light”.
It can also come as a deep, settled peace that encourages us to act or move in a certain direction—a “green light”. This is not about hearing words or voices, but about perceiving something within: an inner intuition, an inner assurance that says, “This is it”. That is the inward witness.
We, New Testament believers, have the Holy Spirit residing within us to help, counsel, and guide us around the clock as long as we remain receptive to His help and guidance. We will become familiar with His voice if we do not grieve the Holy Spirit when He prompts us to forgive someone or warns us not to yield to temptation. The same voice will guide us in making the right decision, alongside a personal Word from God, before we undertake any major decision.
Proverbs 16:3,9 (NJKV) Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established…. A man’s heart plans his way but the Lord directs his steps.
Be humble even when you have heard from the Lord. Present the decision you need to make to God, and do not have any preconceived ideas or answers. Lay down your rights to God. Commit the plan and strategy to Him, and ask Him if it is His will for your life. Seek godly counsel by sharing with them what you perceive to have heard from God.
Reflection: How can you grow in your ability to hear and recognise the Holy Spirit’s guidance in your life?
