Matthew 25:16-21 (NKJV) Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them. “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.
The main message of the Parable of the Talents is that God has called you to be a wealth creator! The wealth we generate is for global mission and good works. Money is neutral—it is the love of money that is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10). God needs us to be a channel of His blessings to those in need and His servants in the field.
We are each given according to our abilities and trustworthiness. Some of us are entrusted with more, while others with less. Nonetheless, we are all expected to use His money wisely, keeping the interests of the Lord in mind.
The master owns all the talents. Therefore, all of us are stewards of the Lord’s money. As Kingdom citizens, we need to adopt a Kingdom mindset, knowing that we are stewards of God’s money.
These two servants were content with the master’s provision for their basic needs and returned everything, including the profit, to the master. They possessed the right attitude towards God and money. Presumably, all their basic needs of food, lodging, and clothing were well taken care of by the master. The task given to them was to invest the money. The first two servants must love their master and appreciate the grace shown to them.
Deuteronomy 8:18 (NKJV) And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
God wants us to multiply the money He has entrusted to us through our business and work. Therefore, we should position ourselves to make money for the Kingdom of God. We need to shift from doing it for our own benefit to doing it for God, and renew our minds with the truth that God wants us to multiply His wealth, and He has given us the ability to get wealth because money can help the poor and fund the preaching of the gospel.
Reflection: What might “being a wealth creator for God’s Kingdom” look like in daily life—not only financially, but also through skills, influence, opportunities, and calling?
