Hebrews 10:11-12,16-18 (NKJV) And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God,… “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds, I will write them,” then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.
In the earthly tabernacle, the priests had no rest because animals were continuously being sacrificed for the people. The sacrifices could not remove the sin of the people permanently. However, the work of atonement and redemption by Jesus was so thorough and complete that no more sacrifices were needed. The blood of Jesus has completely dealt with the sin issue that separated man from a holy God.
Jesus, the Messiah—the promised One through the Abrahamic covenant— finished the work on the cross, He was made sin for us, and gave us His righteousness. The New Covenant has done away with all dead works such as sacrifices, rituals, and offerings by the priests. We are saved entirely by the grace of God, not by works, so that nobody can boast. Also, we can enter a position of rest because there is nothing that we can do to add to the work of atonement by Jesus.
Matthew 27:50-51 (NKJV) And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,
The tearing of the veil in the temple that separated the Holy of Holies was no small task because the veil was 60 x 30 feet, and has the thickness of a handbreadth. One can imagine that God wasted no time in tearing it down because He was so eager to have our fellowship with Him restored.
Jesus, the Lamb of God, was judged on our behalf. He cried out asking why the Father had abandoned Him because God had turned away from Him when our sin was placed upon Christ. In exchange for His shed blood, a new and living way has been opened to us to boldly approach God without fear because Jesus’ blood has given us the imputed righteousness that enables us to stand in the presence of God. We have peace with God, and God is not angry with us because the blood of Jesus has settled the sin issue for us once and for all.
Sermon Series: The Power of the Blood (Part 2)
