Faith In Action
God created us to do life together. We were never meant to live in isolation. We need others to laugh with, cry with, and pray with. Studies have shown that socialization helps relieve the stress of everyday life, while also improving our mental and physical health. Life is easier when you share it with others.
My freshman year of college, I hit the jackpot with an amazing roommate. We had never met face to face, but we became instantaneous best friends. I believe God put us both together for a reason. We constantly encouraged each other. She would leave encouraging notes on my books before a big test or a stressful day. Her encouragement ultimately gave me strength when I felt weak and relief when I felt overwhelmed.
Life is less scary with good friends by your side. James knew the importance of this and emphasized it in chapter five. What’s at the core of an impactful friendship? Prayer. We know this because he states, “the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
It’s powerful to pray for other people. James promises that it leads to healing and restoration. Not just for them, but for you too. When you pray for others, you will see the power of God all around you. Through your prayers for others, God begins to show you the power of prayer. It doesn’t just help them; it helps you too.
Reflection: Who do you know who is going through a difficult time? Commit to praying for them every day for a week.
