The first chapter of Mark advances like an avalanche. John-Mark (usually called “Mark”) jumps right into the story with Jesus’ baptism, His early preaching, His disciple recruitment, a nationally-known exorcism, and a marathon healing ministry. Jesus preached, traveled, and healed hundreds of people within the first few dozen verses.
Jesus was the all-powerful Son of God. Even though he worked miracles and calmed storms, he also got a little tired and overstimulated. Exhausted after an intense workweek, Jesus took some time for prayer and solitude. “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed” (Mark 1:35).
We should mirror this practice in our own lives. Jesus got up before the sun then immediately retreated to a quiet place. While sitting alone, He prayed and meditated before starting his day. He spoke to God before He spoke to anyone else.
How does this compare to your life? Our culture is obsessed with being busy. We wear “I’ve been so busy” like a badge of honor. We hustle hard, move fast, and say yes to everything. That’s what success looks like, right? Wrong. Success often starts in solitude.
Press pause on your own life every day. Even Jesus needed some quiet time. The same is true for you. Intentionally cultivate time to rest and reset with God.
