READ: Psalm 4
As a child, I was terrified of sleeping without a nightlight. I specifically remember one night the power went out, making the entire house fade into pitch black just before lightning flickered and thunder rumbled. I absolutely lost my little mind. Fortunately, my mother came to my rescue! She lit a candle in my room and chilled with me while I drifted off to sleep.
Kids are often scared of strange things like the dark, vampires, clowns, or vampire clowns. As we grow up, we get over those fears. Sure, you aren’t afraid of the dark anymore, but we often replace those fears with new ones. We can lay in bed at night thinking of something someone said, our feelings of insecurity, concern about what the future holds, or even just a general sense of dread and stress. Sure, there are no longer monsters under your bed, but maybe there are some inside your head.
David writes in Psalm 4, “I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
The Psalmist expressed that he could sleep peacefully because God is his safe haven. David had a lot of problems, but he also had peace. We must understand that peace is not an absence of problems; it’s the presence of God.
Do anxious thoughts keep you up? Do you struggle to go through the day without a fearful thought? Ask God to calm your soul. Shift your focus to the supernatural safety found in God’s protection. There is peace in that promise.
Peace is not found in possessions.
Peace is not found in popularity.
Peace is not found in a pill.
Peace is found in a person— a life-giving relationship with Jesus.
We can sleep soundly knowing that our sovereign God never sleeps.
