Today…

If you think about it, we only really live in the now. Every second that goes by is a second that we can’t get back. Ever! So we must cherish what we have now, right this moment. Otherwise, whilst in the process of squandering the present, we are not creating a substantially good memory for the past, nor building any promising future. In the end, we have wasted everything we have – yesterday, today and tomorrow.

This was brilliantly and concisely expressed in The Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis, Volume III, compiled in Yours, Jack…

“The whole lesson of my life has been that no ‘methods of stimulation’ are of any lasting use. They are indeed like drugs— a stronger dose is needed each time and soon no possible dose is effective. We must not bother about thrills at all. Do the present duty, bear the present pain, enjoy the present pleasure;
and leave emotions and ‘experiences’ to look after themselves.”
