Hebrews 11:8,10 (NKJV) By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going…. for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
Our faith is personal, which means we must walk it out ourselves. We won’t know how important it is until we need to exercise our faith in Him, especially when facing challenges.
Abraham and Sarah faced many challenges while fulfilling God’s call on their lives. Abraham obeyed and followed God’s instructions to a place that God had promised him. He modelled the walk of faith for us.
Eternal life is knowing God, and there is no better way to know God than to experience Him when we walk with Him daily. Every Christian is on a faith walk, which started when we received Christ into our hearts. We know we are sojourners in this world who are destined for heaven; Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us and will return like a thief at night one day. Despite not seeing them yet, we have faith that all these things will happen.
While here on earth, we walk with God and live our lives to glorify Him through the calling He has on our lives. As believers, we believe we are wonderfully and beautifully made, created for a purpose. By faith, we believe He will lead us through the different seasons of our lives when we choose to live a consecrated and purposeful life for Him. Unfortunately, many Christians don’t feel they need God or want to live their lives for Him; they only want Him as a Saviour. Consequently, they have not surrendered entirely to the Lordship of Christ and are still living their lives based on what they want rather than what He wants.
However, there will come a day in all our lives when we need to call upon God for help, and faith in God will be required. Therefore, it is better to learn to walk by faith, whether we are called to do something for God or forced to have faith in God because of the difficulties that come.
Hebrews 11:1, 6 (NKJV) Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen…. But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
Abraham and Sarah were called to be a channel of blessings to all the nations of the earth. They needed to have faith in God because it was an impossible situation, given that both had passed childbearing age. Similarly, whenever God calls us to do something, the work will always be near impossible, requiring our complete reliance on Him. Therefore, it will take faith in the word of God to accomplish the task He has entrusted to us. What gives substance to our faith is the promise or call of God because He is a God who honours His word to us.
Sermon Series: The Walk of Faith
