1208 – Do nothing | TBS Devotions

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”

~Philippians 2:3 NIV

It is holiday!  Most of us would like to do nothing else but relax, go to the beach or visit new places.  It is totally normal to request some personal break after months of school days and busy schedule.  You might be surprised but the Bible also talk about a time where you should do nothing!  When your heart is filled with selfish ambition or vain conceit, STOP, do nothing.

As Christian, Jesus call us to put on humility.  Just like you wear a T-shirt and a short on a beautiful Summer day, you should also put on humility and value others above yourselves.  When your brother or your sister want to eat in a certain restaurant but you’d rather sleep all day, stay at home and play your video games, stop and do nothing.  Take some time to consider their thoughts and value their opinion and interest above yours.  If the Holy Spirit prompt you and clearly instruct you to stay at home, you may peacefully share your perspective but do it out of pure heart, not from a selfish desire.

When you see that your friend is not as good as you in a certain area, do you boast around and make him feel worst. Instead, try to share your experience and give him some practical advice to improve himself.  Show him how to get better at it and encourage his progress. You can also work on improving yourself, so both of you can grow together without anyone feeling insecure.

Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth to heal the sick, to preach the good news of the Gospel,  to teach and to reach out to anyone in need.  He could have come as the King of kings and demand obedience to anyone around Him.  But he chose to put on humility and value the need of man above his.

Jesus humbled himself and lived a life if obedience to God.  Even obedience unto death, so you and I can receive salvation from our sin.  The night before he died on the cross he prayed to the Father and ask if it’s ok for him “not to drink from this cup”, but then he also said ” not my will, but yours be done “.

What great example of humility!   As we go through our daily routine, let us pray like Jesus did: not my will, God, but YOURS be done.  By faith, we believe that God’s will for us is good, pleasant and perfect.  It starts with simple decisions and choices but it will make a big difference.

It will change your personality: from a person with selfish ambition to a kind and generous giver. A person after God’s own heart.  Useful in His Hands.

Prayer: Jesus, I praise you and I thank you for setting an excellent example of humility.  Take away any form pride within me.  Teach how to grow and develop all the gift and talents you have already put within me.  I want to use it for your glory.  Amen
